Redmi 9 Review

Redmi 9

Build and Design

To begin with, it feels substantial in the hand. It feels quite solid and not at all fragile, owing to the plastic build, but that doesn't mean it looks bad.
Aside from being plastic, the back panel has a pretty cool design with ripples starting from the rear camera area. We have four cameras divided into two modules, which is an interesting implementation.
Up front is the 6.53-inch screen, which has thick bezels by today's standards. The front camera and speakerphone are built to house a waterdrop notch.
The triple card tray on the left side has slots for two Nano SIM cards and a microSD card. The volume rocker and power button are located on the right side. They're nice and clicky, and the placement is perfect for your thumb or finger.
The bottom is nearly finished, with a headphone jack, USB Type-C port, main microphone, and loudspeaker. On top, we have a secondary noise-cancelling microphone and an IR blaster, which Redmi fans continue to appreciate.
The design is simple but functional, in our opinion. It has a headphone jack as well as a Type-C port, an IR blaster, and a dedicated SD slot. That's a lot of features that a lot of users look for.

Display

The Redmi 9's display is a 6.53-inch FHD+ IPS panel with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 and a pixel density of 395ppi. It also has Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection.
The display quality is above average for an entry-level phone, with 720p displays being standard at this price point. As a result, details are crisp, colors are vibrant, and it gets pretty bright — it's advertised to have 400 nits of typical brightness, which appears to be the case.

Don't expect much in terms of audio quality. The single downward-firing speaker can get loud for such a small space, but it lacks significantly less bass. The mids and highs are clear, but at high volumes, detail is lost. It's best suited for solo listening or calls over the loudspeaker.

Camera

The Redmi 9 has four rear cameras. It's a 13MP main sensor, an 8MP ultrawide sensor, a 5MP macro sensor, and a 2MP depth sensor. It has a single 8MP shooter for selfies.
The color quality of the rear camera isn't great, as it appears unsaturated and leans more towards cooler tones. This is especially true for ultrawide shooters, who also have significant distortion around the edges.

Software and Apps

The Redmi 9 runs MIUI 11 on top of Android 10, with an update to MIUI 12 expected at some point. Whether you've used it before or not, MIUI is always a pleasure to use because of its simple design and ease of use.
It keeps your apps on multiple home screens and lets you choose between traditional navigation buttons and swipe gestures.
The standard Google Suite, Facebook, Netflix, LinkedIn, WPS Office, and a few simple games are pre-installed apps.
Our unit's 32GB of internal storage is reserved for system files, leaving approximately 20.4GB for you to use. This may not be sufficient for some people.

Connectivity and Battery Life

The Redmi 9 has Dual-SIM, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, FM Radio, an IR blaster, and USB Type-C connectivity features, but the model sold in our region does not appear to support NFC.

When we look at the battery, we find a large 5,020mAh cell that supports 18W fast charging. This is a massive capacity that will allow users to use the device for up to two days if properly managed.

The Redmi 9 lasted 16 hours and 52 minutes in our standard video loop test (1080p movie on loop, 50% brightness, 0% volume, airplane mode on). This is not a bad score by any means.
